The Marvin Yeomans Whiting Award

Named for Marvin Whiting, the Birmingham Public Library's first archivist and a pioneer in the professionalization of archives in Alabama, this award recognizes individuals, organizations, or institutions that have made a significant contribution to the preservation and dissemination of local history in Alabama. The award recognizes the preservation of historic documents and oral history but not buildings, historic sites, or artifacts.

2012- Ed Bridges, retired Director, Alabama Department of Archives and History

2013- Elizabeth Wells, former Head of Special Collections, Samford University

2014- Coll'ette King, Mobile County Probate Court

2015- Bobby Joe Seals, Shelby County Museum and Archives

2016- Tom Turley, retired from Alabama Department of Archives and History

2017- Charlene Simpson, Ashville Museum and Archives 

2018- Tracey Berezansky, retired from Alabama Department of Archives and History

2019- Frazine Taylor, retired from Alabama Department of Archives and History and Alabama State University

2020- Dr. Marty Olliff, Wiregrass Archives at Troy University Dothan

2021 - The Invisible Histories Project, a repository for the preservation of the history of LGBTQ life first in the state of Alabama and then the entire Southeast.

2022 - Jim Baggett, Birmingham Public Library

2023 - Gail Thrower, Poarch Band of Creek Indians (posthumous)

2024 - Rebekah Davis, Limestone County Archives
